Smoking is one of those social ‘taboos’ that float around our society and now with the whole ban on smoking in ‘public spaces’ doing the rounds of our judiciary, having a peaceful puff has become harder than ever. Being a smoker since junior college days, I personally had to go through a LOT of damage controlto enjoy a nicotine stick without getting lambasted for it.Here are some tips for all those who wish to enjoy a silent smoke without getting their hindsides in a sling.
1)Location.
A good, safe and secure location is the first step to enjoy a hassle free smoke. The location should be relative secluded, but not shady as it can attract the attention of the law enforcers/self appointed moral police, who dont take too kindly to juvenile smokers. Make sure that you’re not a regular face in the area. Building terraces, relatively uninhibited alleyways and backyards make excellent ‘dens’. In my case, theres a relatively less used alleyway about 3 minutes from my place where me and my friends unwind(often may times a day) without the fear of getting caught.
2)Body language
No matter now ‘wrong’ smoking may seem, you’re still doing it. So stop acting as though you were the one responsible for the holocaust and smoke with pride. A worried face is often a sign that this person is weak and can be taken advantage of. Remember, you’re smoking to release the tension built up over the day, not to add toppings to it. Panicing when confronted is the most common mistake made by people. A cool face with quick disposal of the ‘goods’ is sufficient to let you off the hook.
3)Discretion
Sadly, even though democracy has gifted us the right to choose our own poison, there are a section of people who think they know what’s best for us(and smoking isnt one of them). Even though a worried face isnt recommended, a “I’m smoking and theres shit you can do about it” expression will land you in hot water as well. The cigarette should always be held paralell to the palm with two fingers, this takes care of concealing the sight as well as smell(to a certain extect) of the ciggie. Smoke should always be blown downwards, as the opposite gives away your position.
